Who it's for

Is This the Right Lesson for Your Child?

We teach kids of all comfort levels — first-timers, nervous beginners, sibling groups, and Orlando visitors. Here's how we handle each.

01

First Time in the Ocean

Never surfed before? Perfect. Most kids in our lessons have never been on a board. We start with 20 minutes on the sand so nothing feels scary in the water. By the end of the first session, most first-timers are standing up.

02

Nervous or Hesitant

Nervous kids are normal — probably half the kids we teach show hesitation on Day 1. We recommend private for any child who's anxious: one instructor, your child's pace, as long as they need on the sand before entering the water. We work through fear, not past it.

03

Siblings & Family Groups

Siblings can surf together in a shared lesson — up to 3 kids with one instructor (3:1 ratio); for 4 or more, our Group lessons add instructors so everyone surfs. One drop-off, one pick-up, all the same fun. For families staying a full week, our Surf Camp has family pricing built in.

What to expect

What Happens During a Kids Surf Lesson

No guesswork. Here's exactly how every lesson unfolds — from the parking lot to the wave.

Beach safety briefing

Ocean awareness, how to fall safely, how to handle the board, and what the instructor's signals mean — before any water contact. Kids finish this knowing the rules of the ocean.

Sand practice

Paddling position and the pop-up demonstrated step by step on the sand. Getting it right on dry ground is what makes it click the moment they're in the water.

First waves, together

Into the water with the instructor in arm's reach. They guide the board, time the wave, and call the moment to stand up. Kids feel supported from the first push.

Feedback & cool-down

What worked, what to focus on next, and a quick reset on the beach. Most kids stand up on a wave during their first session — and immediately want to go again.

Beginner-friendly surf conditions at Cocoa Beach Florida — ideal for kids learning to surf
The location

Why Cocoa Beach Is Perfect for Kids Learning to Surf

Beginner-friendly waves and a sandy bottom. The waves at Cocoa Beach roll in consistently and gently — small enough for a 6-year-old, real enough to be exciting. The ocean floor is soft sand all the way past the breakers. No coral, no rocks, no reef. If your child falls — and they will, that's how surfing works — they land on sand. Every time.

Close to Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center. About an hour east of Orlando and 15 minutes from the Space Center, Cocoa Beach is the natural pick for families visiting Disney, Universal, a launch, or boarding a cruise from Port Canaveral. Book a morning lesson, be back at the parks by lunch.

Kids Surf Lessons Cocoa Beach — Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start surfing?
We teach kids from age 6 and up. Younger than 6, we usually recommend waiting — lessons require enough focus and physical coordination that earlier starts can feel frustrating rather than fun. By age 7 or 8, most kids are catching their first wave on Day 1.
Is surfing safe for kids?
Surfing has real risks, and we don't pretend otherwise. What we control: a strict 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio in groups (1:1 in private lessons), trained instructors in the water with your child at all times, gear matched to your child's size and skill, and Cocoa Beach's sandy, beginner-friendly conditions. With those things in place, kids surf lessons are no more dangerous than learning to swim or ride a bike.
Does my child need to know how to swim?
Yes. Your child should be comfortable in water over their head and able to swim at least 25 yards unassisted. Surfing happens in moving water, and even with an instructor right there, basic swimming ability is non-negotiable for safety.
What if my child is nervous or afraid of the ocean?
Nervous kids are normal — probably half the kids we teach show some hesitation on Day 1, and almost all of them are smiling by the end. We recommend booking a private lesson for any child who's anxious: one-on-one, your child sets the pace. The instructor stays with them on the sand longer if needed, walks them slowly into shallow water, and only paddles out as far as they're comfortable.
How long is a kids surf lesson?
Lessons run 1 to 2 hours, depending on ocean conditions and your child's energy. We don't rush kids out of the water if they're catching waves, and we don't drag the lesson past the point where they're getting tired.
How many lessons until my child can stand up on a wave?
Most kids stand up during their first lesson — even if just briefly. Riding a wave smoothly, turning, and choosing their own waves usually takes 4 to 6 sessions of consistent practice. Our Starter and Progression Packs are built around that exact learning curve.
Can I watch my child's surf lesson from the beach?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. The beach is wide, there's plenty of room for a chair and umbrella, and you'll have a clear view of every wave your child catches. Bring a camera — first-wave photos are worth keeping.
Can two or three siblings take a surf lesson at the same time?
Yes — siblings can absolutely surf together. A shared lesson ($65/hr per child) fits up to three siblings under our 3:1 ratio. For families spending a full week, our Cocoa Beach Surf Camp has family pricing: $350 for one child, $650 for two, $900 for three — under $60 per child per day.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions are unsafe — lightning, strong rip currents, dangerous swell — we reschedule at no charge. Rain alone is usually not an issue; surfing in light rain is a non-event. We make the call the morning of, in direct contact with you.
How far in advance should I book a kids surf lesson?
For a single lesson, 3 to 5 days ahead is usually enough during the off-season. For weekends, spring break, or summer (June–August), book at least 2 weeks ahead — spots fill fast under our 3:1 ratio. If you're traveling from out of state, reach out as early as you can at +1 (321) 386-9993.
